Chemistry

Stage 1 Chemistry is about learning the key concepts of the subject while understanding the importance of Chemistry in our everyday lives. Almost everything that we do has a link to Chemistry, and it is vital in helping with solutions to problems such as climate change, pollution, metal production for electric vehicles and development of new medications. You can study Chemistry in Semester 1, Semester 2 or both. Topics include:
- The periodic table,
- Atomic structure,
- Chemical bonding,
- Mole theory,
- Organic Chemistry,
- Acids and bases,
- Mixtures of solutions,
- Batteries and how the components for batteries are extracted and produced.
You will participate in various practical sessions to apply the knowledge you have learned. You do not have to do Semester 1 to complete Semester 2, but it is an advantage to do so.

Assessment in Semester 1:
Assessment Type 1: Investigations Folio (50%)
Assessment Type 2: Skills and Applications Tasks (50%)
Assessment in Semester 2:
Assessment Type 1: Investigations Folio (70%)
Assessment Type 2: Skills and Applications Tasks (30%)
Pathways:
Stage 1 Chemistry is a prerequisite for Stage 2 Chemistry. Students wishing to pursue further study in Chemistry in tertiary institutions can do so in a wide range of fields. Students may choose to study a Bachelor of Science to gain further knowledge of a range of concepts, and can pursue more specific areas of study such as drug delivery and design, environmental science, materials development and food and drink manufacturing and more.
