This course will guide students through three major topics: Healthy Eating Practices, Food Safety and Handling, and Contemporary Issues in Food and Hospitality. The course will incorporate practical activities, group projects, and investigations. Students will participate in excursions to local food establishments to assess food safety and hospitality standards.

 

The topics that will be covered are;

  • An introduction to nutrition,
  • Over nutrition and undernutrition,
  • Micronutrients like vitamins and minerals, digestion,
  • Fresh versus processed food,
  • Food labelling and recommended daily intakes,
  • Preservation, contamination, and safe handling,
  • Monetary considerations when preparing meals

Assessment:

  • Assessment Type 1: Practical Activity Cooking Assessments(40%)
  • Assessment Type 2: Group Activity (40%)
  • Assessment Type 3: Individual Investigation (20%)

Pathways:

Stage 1 Food Technology is a perfect subject for those interested in nutrition and preparing food for individuals or groups. This subject will be a great help for further study in both the science and humanities areas. It will also provide a good foundation of food awareness for students as they steadily have more independence.
